In August 2012 our baby son was taken to Shooting Stars Chase Christopher's Hospice for palliative care. He unfortunately only stayed there for three days before his short life ended.
When the doctors told us that nothing further could be done to help Nathan we were certain that we did not want him to die at home. To come home every day to the memory that he passed away in a particular room would be too much to bear especially as he spent so little time at home anyway. However we were also not sure we would want Nathan to go to a children's hospice.
After a short visit to Christopher's our perceptions changed entirely. Christopher's is far from the dreary, depressing place that we had imagined. The highly skilled staff and volunteers manage to create an environment where you are able feel comfortable at a time where you feel anything but. Here the four of us were able to stay together in the same room, eat together at meal times and spend the last few precious moments of Nathan's life as a family. The staff here cook, clean and generally care for you as a family so that you can focus entirely on being together.
To run Shooting Stars Chase costs £23,000 per day and with no guarunteed government funding they rely heavily on public donations to maintain their vital service.
This year, on Nathan's birthday we will begin a 5 day challenge to complete the Three Peaks challenge whilst cycling from mountain to mountain. Not only do we hope to raise some money to contribute towards the running costs of Shooting Stars but to raise awareness of the incredible work they do.
